Ghs Im Residency Personal Statement

Thank you for considering the Greenville Health System (GHS)/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USCSOMG) for your visiting medical student rotation. We are excited to be exclusively using the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Applications will be reviewed by GHS Health Sciences Center (HSC) Student Affairs Administration and forwarded to the appropriate department for review. When a decision is made by the department, the student will be notified.

Application Requirements

  • Completion of all application fields in VSAS plus the department-specific requirements for specific rotations of applicant’s interest.
    • Background check must be approved in VSAS from home institution.
    • AAMC Standardized Immunization Form – Need dates of the following vaccinations or titers:
      • MMR – 2 vaccinations or positive titers
      • Varicella – 2 vaccinations or positive titer (GHS does not accept “history of chicken pox as proof of immunity”)
      • Hep B – 3 vaccinations or positive titer
      • 2 step TB PPD and/or annual TB PPD (blood tests are not accepted)
      • Flu Shot – only during flu season (October – April)
  • After acceptance, a processing fee of $175 is required of each visiting medical student.
    • The processing fee will not be refunded for cancellation.
    • This fee must be paid by check made out to “Greenville Health System” and mailed to:

  • After acceptance, visiting medical students will be required to complete GHS orientation modules on HealthStream.

Visiting Student Responsibilities

  • Visiting students are responsible for their own personal health care costs.
  • Visiting students must provide current documentation of health insurance coverage.
  • Visiting students are responsible for their own meals.
  • Parking is provided for visiting medical students.
  • Scrubs are provided for visiting medical students.
  • Visiting students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. Often, students are able to find short-term options at https://rotatingroom.com/ or http://www.hawthorneatthecarlyle.com/, but we encourage you to explore all options available.
  • Visiting students who are unable to attend an approved elective are responsible for notifying GHS Student Affairs Administration regarding cancellation at least four weeks prior to the start of the rotation.
  • If your elective is approved, additional information will be emailed to you regarding student orientation/clearance.

Department-Specific Application Requirements

Note: You are required to submit your USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX score report for ALL departments

Emergency Medicine

  • USMLE Step 1 or Step 2: No minimum
  • COMLEX: Not accepted
  • Personal Statement: Why do you want to do a rotation with us? (300 word-limit)

Family Medicine

  • USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX: No minimum
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • Personal Statement: Why are you interested in completing a Family Medicine AI with GHS, and what do you hope to learn from this experience?

Internal Medicine

  • USMLE Step 1: Minimum of 220 or COMLEX: Minimum of 550
  • Personal Statement: Why Internal Medicine? Why GHS?

Pediatrics

  • USMLE Step 1: Minimum of 210 or COMLEX: Minimum of 550
  • Personal Statement: Why you want a specific rotation? Why GHS? Why that experience/specialty? (One to two paragraphs)
  • For those students interested in PICU rotations, please submit performance on prior inpatient experience.
  • Please indicate if you are pursuing combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency.

Psychiatry

  • USMLE: Minimum of 200 or COMLEX: Minimum of 540
  • Personal Statement: Why you want a specific rotation? Why GHS? Why that experience/specialty? (One to two paragraphs)
  • Completion of M3 Psychiatry core clerkship

OBGYN

  • USMLE Step 1: Minimum of 220
  • COMLEX: Not accepted
  • Detailed description of your M3 clerkship experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology, addressing each of the following: Location of clerkship, duration of clerkship, clerkship setting (community preceptor vs. teaching hospital with residency), content of required formal lecture curriculum, distribution of time spent with residents vs. preceptors and type of end-of-clerkship assessments for grading.

Orthopaedic Surgery

  • USMLE Step 1: Minimum of 230
  • COMLEX: Not accepted
  • Personal Statement: Discuss your rationale and goals for completing the elective. (100 word-limit)

Surgery

  • USMLE Step 1: Minimum of 230 or COMLEX: Minimum of 600
  • Personal statement: Why surgery and why GHS? (one paragraph)
  • Completion and pass of M3 surgery clerkship

Ophthalmology

  • USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX: No minimum
  • Prior Ophthalmology rotation is recommended
